What is CryptoExpress?

CryptoExpress is a premier provider of secure, encrypted email hosting, chat and file storage/sharing. The automatic and transparent encryption ensures end-to-end security that is unmatched in the industry. Software and web browser compatibility provides access to your secure email account from any Internet connected computer.

Messages and documents sent through or stored on our system are private and confidential. You write a message and we securely deliver it to the recipient. You upload a file and we securely store it "for your eyes only" viewing. Nobody has the ability to intercept the content of your account. For more detailed information regarding security built into our system see CryptoExpress Security.

What is the difference between CryptoExpress and other e-mail services like Hotmail or Gmail?

CryptoExpress is fully encrypted "for your eyes only" private secure email hosting provider. Hotmail, Gmail as well as most free and paid e-mail services is wide open to hackers, snoops, spy agencies, and practically anyone who wants to get at your messages.

CryptoExpress is a private secure email hosting provider, it is much more then an e-mail service, it is a secure communications and storage solution. With CryptoExpress, your communication and files are safe and encrypted from the moment you send them through our system. Having complete logs of all transmissions made and all of the data stored on our servers, but lacking account access codes, does not give access to the 'plain-text' content.

What is the difference between CryptoExpress and other file storage and sharing services?

One of CryptoExpress's integrated services - CryptoVault - facilitates secure storage of your documents. Unlike other services, CryptoExpress provides extremely strong cryptography and security for all your documents. In addition, CryptoExpress allows you to securely distribute digital documents electronically.

Why do I need to encrypt my e-mail and chat?

Many people who use traditional e-mail systems assume the e-mail they send is private. This is simply not true. A message sent by a user travels in plain text (i.e. easily readable) from the originating computer to a mail server. It is stored on a server as text and subsequently forwarded from one mail server to another until it reaches the destination.

Messages are stored on the servers for days, sometimes weeks and months. Most servers do daily backups, storing your messages for even longer periods of time. Once your message is sent it can be intercepted, copied and stored. You don't know who has access to what may be sensitive information. Refer to our Security section for more information.

What is encryption?

Encryption is a procedure used in cryptography to convert plaintext into ciphertext in order to prevent any but the intended recipient from reading the data.

Why is there no spam on CryptoExpress?

CryptoExpress is a private secure email hosting provider. You have the complete control over your account. You explicitly define whom you communicate with by adding people to your contact list. More information on this issue is available in the tutorial.

Why is CryptoExpress not a "Free" Service?

Nothing in this world is free. Anyone who claims to offer any professional service for "free" is not telling the truth. Internet services cost money to run and maintain. Some providers recover costs through selling addresses to advertisers, some recover their costs through sponsored advertising. Others have their own reasons for allowing you to use their so called "secure" services at no apparent cost to you.

Is software installation necessary?

Do I need to install any software to access my account?

No software installation is required. You may access your account directly from this URL: http://www.cryptoexpress.com/web-edition.php

However, you can also install software on your computer. You will benefit from improved efficiency and faster response time. CryptoExpress is available for all major operating systems including Windows, OS X and Linux. Please install software from this URL: http://www.cryptoexpress.com/download/

Lost Passphrase?

Can't login to your account?

The following message is displayed when attempting to login?

The Passphrase for user 'johndoe' is invalid.
Please remember that usernames and passphrases are case sensitive.
The passphrase is not entered correctly.

CryptoExpress is designed with your privacy and protection in mind. For this reason all data on the system is heavily encrypted with the latest 256-bit technology. The technology protects you against unauthorized access by keeping everyone out of your account. Our system administrators do not have access to your account and cannot reset your password for you.

For business clients password reset may be available. Please contact your account administrator to find out if your account was enabled for password reset. This feature must be enabled on your account by your administrator prior to the password loss. If this feature was not enabled then you will not be able to reset your password.

If you have enabled encrypted password recovery, then your password may be recovered if you correctly answer your security questions. To access password recovery feature click "Forgot Password" on the login screen. If you do not know the answers to your security questions you will not be able to recover your password as a combination of those answers is required to decrypt your password.

Your password is used to secure your account encryption keys. When a password is lost the encryption keys cannot be decrypted and access to your account is not possible.

If you do not have the password recovery option enabled, then your only option to recover access is to try hard to remember your password. If you are not sure what your login name is then we can confirm it for you. Login names and passwords are case sensitive. Email addresses are usually not used as login names, but occasionally some clients do use them. If your email address is "johndoe@cryptoexpress.com" then your login name most likely is "johndoe".

What to do if I still cannot remember my password?

If you are certain you have the correct login name but have lost your password, then your only option is to create a new replacement account:

1. Click "New Account" on the login screen.
2. Enter the desired user name and the desired password.
3. Read the license agreement and click the "I Accept" check box.
4. Click "Create".
5. Email us with your old and new login names.

Please include as much information as you can to help us verify your old account. Once we are satisfied you are the owner of the old account we will upgrade your new account to the same level as your previous account at no charge to you.

Who can I send secure email to?

With your CryptoExpress account you can send secure and encrypted email to any valid email address. Messages sent to email addresses that do not support encryption will be encrypted with our Q&A technology. You will provide a Question and Answer, and the recipient will need to provide the correct Answer to access the message.

All replies to your secure messages are automatically encrypted.

All secure messages support automatic message expiry and revoke features.

How do I use Two Factor Authentication?

How to use Two Factor Authentication for maximum security.

Two factor authentication is a system where two different methods are used to authenticate login credetials. Using two factors as opposed to one delivers a higher level of authentication assurance.

There are three methods by which people authenticate themselves to digital systems:

* something you know, such as a password or a PIN,
* something you have, such as a hardware security token,
* something you are, such as a fingerprint or a retinal scan

Your account is cabable of using strong, two factor authentication in the form of a password and a security key. Your password provides the "something you know" component and the security key provides the "something you have" component.

Security Key

The security key is an encrypted encryption key that is can be stored on any fixed or removable device. We highly recommend using a removable USB drive, but any other device will work.

Creating Your Security Key

1. Login to your account and go to: Tools > Account Options > Options and unmark the "Store encrypted Private Key on the server" option. Click OK to close the dialog box and confirm the location where the encrypted version of the encryption key is to be stored.

Select any location you wish, including removable media such a USB memory stick, or use the default.

Your key has now been moved from our secure server to your local computer.

You need to have this key physically available to access your account.

2. By default your encryption key is stored in the "private- key.properties" file in your default data folder. If you need help locating the file use the operating system search function. Copy or move this file to the removable device that you want to use as your Security Key.

NOTICE: It is imperative that you keep a backup copy of this file as you absolutely need it to access your account. If you loose either your password or your encryption keys file you will NOT be able to access your account.

Using Your Security Key

Login to your account the same way you normally do.

If you have kept a copy of the keys file on your local computer in the default folder, then you will be logged in automatically.

If you only have a copy of the file on a removable device, then you will be asked to select the keys file. Insert your removable device and select the keys file.

Recommendations

Many people choose to keep a local copy of the keys file on their own computer and use the removable device on all other PCs.

For maximum security do not keep a local copy of the keys file and remove the Security Key as soon as you have logged into your account.

Keep a copy of the keys file in safe place and update it when you change your password.

How to use Multiple Email Addresses?

How to create and use more then one email address.

To create an additional email address for an existing account go to Tools > Account Options and click the button to the right of your default email address for the account.

Use the dialog window to add and edit existing email addresses. You have access to a number of different domain names as well as to your own (if you do own one) domain name.

All email addressed to any of your email addresses will be delivered into your Inbox.

When composing a message click the From button to select the sending email address.

Benefits

* Allows smooth transition from one email address to another without closing and opening a new account. Your address books, contacts, archived emails, files, etc. will remain in your account while you switch email addresses.
* Allows you to efficiently handle email for multiple domains or email addresses. For example you can have you@emailex.com, and you@your-own-domain.com email addresses all assigned to one account.
* Easily see which email address was used to send you messages. Very useful feature for tracing spam sources.
* One click selection of the outgoing email address.
* Easily select your default email address.
* Facilitates creation and deletion of "disposable" email addresses.
